Biography

Diane Marie Amann is the Emily & Ernest Woodruff Chair in International Law and Faculty Co-Director of the Dean Rusk International Law Center at the University of Georgia School of Law. She is widely published in international criminal law and related fields, including international humanitarian law, public international law, human rights, constitutional law, legal history, and security governance.

In 2018, she was a Research Visitor at Oxford University Faculty of Law’s Bonavero Institute of Human Rights and Visiting Fellow at Mansfield College, an External Scientific Fellow at Max Planck Institute Luxembourg, and the inaugural Breslauer, Rutman & Anderson Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Genocide Research of the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation in Los Angeles. Prior appointments include: Professor of Law and founding Director of the California International Law Center at the University of California-Davis; Professeur invitée at Université de Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne); and Visiting Professor of Law at UCLA, the University of California-Berkeley, and the Irish Centre for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland-Galway. A Counsellor and past Vice President of the American Society of International Law and recipient of ASIL’s Prominent Woman in International Law Award, Professor Amann also serves on the editorial boards of the International Criminal Law Review, Criminal Law Forum, and Max Planck Encyclopedia of International Procedural Law. Her experience includes service as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens and practice as a federal criminal defense attorney in San Francisco.

A dual Irish-US citizen, Professor Amann has served since 2012 as the International Criminal Court Prosecutor’s Special Adviser on Children in & affected by Armed Conflict, and assisted in the preparation of the ICC Office of the Prosecutor Policy on Children (2016). She contributes to this Forum solely in her personal capacity.
